Recent law changes mean that it is no longer legal in the UK to advertise to children before 9pm on television. This is part of the government’s commitment (promise) to protect children from seeing sensitive or unsuitable products which are meant for adults. In the UK, targeted child advertising has become a worrying problem. Politicians believe that the advertisements youngsters watch often affect the choices they make, and these choices can turn into damaging lifelong habits.
These new rules and regulations do not just cover TV commercials but include limits on unsuitable advertising on the internet and social media too. Large companies objected to these government controls and fought against the limits being put on them, but they were unsuccessful.
Some of the health-related illnesses of the topics restricted, like alcohol and junk food, cost the NHS billions of pounds to treat every year. Restrictions on advertising could help future generations suffer less from heart disease, stroke and diabetes. Supporters hope that the new advertising ban will work, just like similar bans did in the past against tobacco promotion.
